From 25 to 29 October 2026, Caritas Rwanda, in collaboration with local partners, conducted malaria awareness campaigns in Nkanka Sector in Rusizi District, Bushenge Sector in Nyamasheke District, as well as Boneza and Mushubati sectors in Rutsiro District.
The campaigns targeted these sectors because they continue to report high numbers of malaria cases, highlighting the need to strengthen community awareness and prevention efforts.
Through community assemblies, awareness-raising activities and community work (Umuganda), residents received information on how malaria is transmitted, its signs and symptoms, prevention measures, and the importance of seeking early diagnosis and treatment. The activities also emphasised the need to eliminate mosquito breeding sites to help reduce the spread of the disease.

In addition, residents were sensitised to Rwanda’s Multiple First-Line Therapies (MFT) strategy, which involves using different approved antimalarial medicines to treat uncomplicated malaria in different geographical areas. The type of medicine recommended depends on the area where treatment is provided.
Rwanda adopted this approach to reduce the risk of malaria parasites developing resistance to a single antimalarial medicine, thereby helping to preserve the effectiveness of available treatments.
Through these initiatives, Caritas Rwanda and its partners continue to strengthen community knowledge, promote malaria prevention, and encourage timely access to appropriate treatment as part of ongoing efforts to combat malaria in Rwanda.
