Caritas Rwanda/ Gikuriro Program is an integrated nutrition and WASH program for five years (2015-2020), a USAID Program awarded to Catholic Relief Services in consortium with the Netherlands Development Organization, SNV. Caritas Rwanda implements in two districts, Nyabihu in west province and Ruhango in south province.
To ensure access to water and sanitation for all, Caritas Rwanda through Gikuriro program has constructed 15 community water kiosks (7 In Nyabihu and 8 in Ruhango) and 54 community water springs (36 in Nyabihu and 18 in Ruhango).
People benefiting from these water springs testify that they came as an answer to their hygiene problems.
MUKESHIMANA Beatha, one of the people benefiting the water spring in Ruhango district, states that before the spring was built they used to fetch water at an unprotected source located in 1 hour from the village, and because of that, Diseases related to lack of hygiene were frequent and children were missing classes because of fetching water far from their villages.
She said: “I no longer spend much time at the water source, for such big support in our village, I commit to improve my life through adopting the recommended hygiene and sanitation practices at my home as learnt in our Community Hygiene Club, Long life to Caritas that helps us.”
KASAVU Jean Nepo from Nyabihu district with a smiling face said “I am very grateful for this water infrastructure built in our village, now 257 households are getting the clean water in short time and the Children are no longer absent in schools for fetching water far away from our village”.
As Caritas Rwanda objectives are based on helping vulnerable people and support their contribution, Caritas Rwanda recognizes that people supported are improving their lives and encourages them to take care of received goods.
The constructed water infrastructures will serve 31,678 and 15,592 people in Nyabihu and Ruhango respectively.
