La Caritas Rwanda a été créée en 1960. Contenu par les Évêques Catholiques du Rwanda. Elle a été officiellement reconnue comme une organisation sans but lucratif par l’arrêté ministériel n° 499/08 en 1962, et est devenue une Organisation non gouvernementale conformément à la loi no 06/2012 du 17/02/2012 déterminant la gestion et la gouvernance des institutions basées sur les religions au Rwanda. Depuis 1965, Caritas Rwanda a été intégrée dans une organisation étendue, Caritas Internationalis, qui est une confédération internationale de toutes les Caritas du monde.  Actuellement, la Caritas Rwanda œuvre dans tout le pays à travers les Caritas diocésaines, Caritas paroissiales, Caritas des Centrales et les Caritas des Communautés Ecclésiales de Base.

Mission de la Caritas Rwanda

La Caritas Rwanda vise à créer une communauté de personnes qui respectent la dignité humaine dans laquelle chaque être humain a été créé, la dignité privée par la discrimination, l'extrême pauvreté, les maladies et l'injustice. La Caritas aide les personnes vulnérables à travers ses œuvres socio-caritatives, les initiatives dans les domaines de santé et de développement. Toutes ces activités sont basées sur la charité.

Rwanda was established in 1960 by Catholic Bishops of Rwanda. It was officially recognized as a non-profit organization by the ministerial order nr 499/08 in 1962, and became a non-governmental organization according to the law no 06/2012 of 17/02/2012 governing the management and governance of religion-based institutions in Rwanda. Since 1965, Caritas Rwanda was integrated in an extended Caritas Organization known as, Caritas Internationalis, which is an international confederation of all Caritas organizations in the world. At the moment Caritas Rwanda is operating countrywide through Diocesan Caritas, Parish Caritas, sub-parish and Small Christian Communities’ Caritas.

Caritas Rwanda’s Vision and Mission

The Vision of Caritas Rwanda is to achieve a society that provides human dignity in which every human being was created; the dignity deprived by discrimination, extreme poverty, sickness and injustice. Caritas assist the vulnerable through its socio-welfare activities, health and development initiatives. All these activities are based on Charity.

Delegation from Aktion Hoffnung, Germany Visit to Caritas Rwanda

Guests in Caritas Rwanda OfficeApril 17th, 2019, a team of 10 delegates from Aktion Hoffnung, Germany, led by Mr. Anton Vaas visited Caritas Rwanda office and field activities. The main purpose of the visit was to know each other and to explore opportunities of collaboration in what both institutions are doing. On behalf of Secretary General of Caritas Rwanda, Mr. Prosper SEBAGENZI, Caritas Rwanda Programs’ Director and Jean NTAKIRUTIMANA, USAID Gimbuka Program Team Leader discussed and shared with the team Caritas Rwanda vision, mission and values along with its interventions in social welfare, health and development. 

The guest were explained how Caritas Rwanda is structured from the National to the grass root level where Basic Christian Organizations (lowest level of Caritas Rwanda structure) live with the community and play an important role in targeting and delivering quality services to the vulnerable people.

The guests inquired about Caritas Rwanda source of funds and were explained that Caritas Rwanda goes through Caritas member organization all over the world thanks to the support by Caritas Internationalis (CI) to implement humanitarian and development activities and enters into cooperatives agreements with international donors such as USAID, DFID, and European Union among others. Caritas Rwanda believes and is sure of the great role played by Rwandan community in the local funds raising and peer to peer support targeting most vulnerable in the community.

After the meeting at Caritas Rwanda Head Quarters, the delegate was accompanied to the field to show case of activities implemented by Caritas Rwanda in Kamonyi district, Musambira Sector, Rukambura Cell and Bitsibo Village.  

Participants had the opportunity to share with Jyambere Mwana Community Based Nutrition School (CBNS) and Bitsibo Village Kitchen as well as Koraneza Mwana saving group and a TVET graduate Bucyibaruta JMV who has so far achieved progress in his life since he has been supported by Gimbuka.

During the visit of Village Kitchen activities form BITSIBO village, a balanced diet for 110 Under 5 children was prepared and CHW has conducted growth monitoring as usual. François, a CHW coordinator from RUKAMBURA cell has explained the different activities carried out in Bitsibo village in partnership with USAID GIMBUKA, where he stressed the good position of Caritas USAID GIMBUKA in the nutritional status improvement especially for children under five. The diet prepared was composed of carbohydrates, proteins and protecting food including vegetables and fruits. He explained that this occurs on weekly basis every Thursday to strengthen the capacity of mothers with U5 children on how to prepare the balanced diet for their children and other members of their families. During this visit the CBNS member has given the various testimonies: NYAKUBYARA Gaudance has shown that all mothers are able to prepare the balanced diet, and have received goats from USAID GIMBUKA and are able to satisfy family needs in complement with their husbands. The members of CBNS who are also members of saving group Koraneza Mwana have received loans for their income generating activities and have paid back as due.

The saving group leader Ernestine MUSHIMIYIMANA said that in December 2018 they shared out the amount of 567.000 Frw that was used to buy small animals according to each member needs: goats, pigs, rabbit and chickens were bought. The member of the saving group have an objective to pay for health insurance to every family member.

TVET JMV BUCYIBARUTA is an OVC supported by USAID GIMBUKA in the 2013 for training on welding at Kinazi TVET (Technical, Vocational and Education Training) and after graduation he has started preparing and delivering doors and windows to different people. He has now a driving license for motorcycle after which he bought motorcycle for transporting passengers in different zone of Kamonyi and others Districts. Thanks to the support by Caritas USAID GIMBUKA Program support that has boosted his esteem, he married a bachelor’s degree holder in accounting.

The visitors acknowledged the hospitality of the visited Gimbuka beneficiaries and encouraged them to continue their efforts towards preventing the malnutrition in Under 5 children in sustainable manner. They that saving groups are key activity to generate income for most vulnerable people if well monitored.
