       The fight against malnutrition cannot be carried out without hygiene

Some residents of different sectors in Nyabihu and Ruhango districts are thankful and overjoyed with the access to clean water, after over 30 years fetching water from streams.

Nyabihu and Ruhango Districts in collaboration with their partner, the GIKURIRO project, funded by USAID, and implemented by CRS, SNV and Caritas Rwanda constructed 8 hand washing stations in 8 health centers, 13 water kiosks, 72 water springs in both districts.

All these infrastructures were presented to the residents on June 29, 2020 at Nyabihu and on July 2, 2020 at Ruhango district. People expressed their emotions after getting access to clean water which will be used to address the problems posed by unhygienic.

“I am 32 years old , all this time in our home we used the dirty water of a river with a yellow color, you can’t even wash clothes with it, we even  drank it, oh and the fight against COVID-19 using this water was another issue. Now that we have access to clean water is a miracle for us. '' Said Niyotwiringiye Jean de la Croix from Nyirabashenyi village in Nyabihu district.

Dr. Yvonne Umurungi Serubibi, Deputy Chief of Party at USAID/GIKURIRO program who contributed to the supply of clean water in Nyabihu, reminded that the goal of combating malnutrition cannot be achieved without hygiene and that the population can’t fight the COVID-19 pandemic without hygiene.

Mayor of Nyabihu District, Mukandayisenga Antoinette, call up the residents to take good care of the water facilities provided to them as it is their business and to continue to be vigilant on COVID-19 prevention guidelines, especially the cleanliness and wearing masks properly.

All Nyabihu and Ruhango Districts Water Supply Project plus one block of VIP latrine and one MHM room in each district, were implemented by these districts in collaboration with, the GIKURIRO project, funded by USAID, implemented by CRS, SNV, Caritas Rwanda.
The project was completed at a cost of 200 million Rwandan francs.
